Isaiah 53 (Part 8) - Isa 53:10 10. Isa 53:10 - Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. A. Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; i. Yet adv. – III. 9. a. as conj. adv. or conj. (developed from I), introducing an additional fact or circumstance which is adverse to, or the contrary of what would naturally be expected from, that just mentioned: In spite of that, for all that, nevertheless, notwithstanding. Sometimes strengthened by nevertheless, etc. Often correlative to though, etc. ii. Contrary to what would naturally be expected, despite the fact that Jesus Christ never sinned, it nevertheless pleased the LORD to bruise Him. a. God hates sin (Jer 44:3-4; Zec 8:17; Heb 1:9; Rev 2:6, 15) and sinners (Psa 5:4-5). b. God cannot bear to even behold sin (Hab 1:13). c. Sin must be punished to satisfy His righteous indignation toward it (Nah 1:3; Exo 34:7; Job 10:14). d. Punishing sin is an act of divine justice which pleases God. iii. Because Christ was made sin for us (2Co 5:21), it pleased the LORD to bruise Him because satisfaction of God’s demand for justice was thereby made. iv. God did not spare His own Son from the punishment His elect’s sin deserved (Rom 8:32). v. God loved His Son Jesus Christ (Joh 5:20; Joh 10:17), but when He was made sin for us and hung on the cross suffering God’s wrath, the Father had to forsake Him in order to punish the sin that was imputed to Him (Mat 27:46). B. he hath put him to grief: i. God put Jesus to grief when he suffered for our sins (see Isa 53:3-4). ii. Grief n. – 1. Hardship, suffering; a kind, or cause, of hardship or suffering. C. when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, i. Christ’s body was made an offering for sin (Heb 10:10). a. But it was not only His body that suffered for sin. b. God made His soul an offering for sin as well. ii. Both the soul and body of the wicked will be punished in hell (Mat 10:28). a. Therefore, Christ needed to suffer in both soul and body for our sins. b. Leading up to his suffering, Jesus’ soul was troubled (Joh 12:27). c. In the garden of Gethsemane where His suffering began, Jesus’ soul was exceeding sorrowful, even unto death (Mat 26:38). d. Jesus’ soul suffered the torments of hell while He hung on the cross (Act 2:27 c/w Psa 116:3; Psa 22:14). e. Suffering in mind can be just as painful, or often times more so, than suffering in body. iii. Christ’s soul was made an offering for sin. a. Under the law of Moses, animals were offered as sacrifices for sin, but those offerings could never take away sin (Heb 10:1-4). b. It was necessary for the sinless Son of God to be made an offering for sin to take away the sins of His people (Heb 10:5-14; Heb 9:26; Eph 5:2). D. he shall see his seed, i. When Christ died, He brought forth much fruit (Joh 12:23-24). ii. Seed n. – 5. Offspring, progeny. Now rare except in Biblical phraseology. a. The elect whom God gave to Christ (Joh 17:2, 6) are Abraham’s seed which means that they are Christ’s seed (Gal 3:29). b. They are the children which God gave Him (Heb 2:13). c. His seed are His people who serve Him (Psa 22:30-31). iii. After Jesus suffered and died, He was resurrected and ascended into heaven to go and prepare a place for His people which He saved (Joh 14:1-3). a. He is coming back for us at which time we will ever be with the Lord (1Th 4:16-17). b. Christ will see His seed and be worshipped by them for all eternity. E. he shall prolong his days, i. Christ rose from the dead to die no more (Rom 6:9). ii. He has an endless life (Heb 7:16). iii. He ever liveth to make intercession for us (Heb 7:25). iv. He was dead but is alive forevermore (Rev 1:18). v. The Messiah indeed would prolong his days by laying down His life for His people and being resurrected after He had made full atonement for them. F. and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. i. Jesus endured the cross for the joy that was set before Him (Heb 12:2). ii. After Jesus suffered, He ascended to the right hand of God where there are pleasures forevermore (Psa 16:8-11).
